SOFÍA QUIRNO

Bringing together concrete and metaphorical images, Sofía Quirno´s work proposes an experience of everyday associations. Influenced by the Argentine tradition of Feminism, Surrealism, and Psychoanalysis, Quirno sets to play with exiting schemas using humor to evidence vulnerability.s in New York.

Her paintings and installations reinterpret landscapes of life to enhance the perception of the strange and often funny experience that it is to be in the world. Using collage as her underlying processes, she experiments with montage, overlapping images and perspectives to capture the randomness of thoughts and the multiple relationships between meanings and forms.

Quirno was born in 1978, Buenos Aires, Argentina. She lives and works in New York.

She graduated from Torcuato Di Tella University and has a degree in International Studies (2002). She is also a graduate of a Masters in Visual Arts from Parsons The New School (2015).

She was part of the Paint School fellowship, Shandaken Projects (2020) and the Viewing Program 20/21 at The Drawing Center in New York. She received the Deans Merit Scholarship Award (2013) and Student Senate Grant (2015) at Parsons The New School of Design and the Sterling Clark Scholarship as artist-in-residence at Vermont Studio Center (in 2012). Quirno was also an artist-in-residence at Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (2013) and Triangle Arts Workshop (2010).
