SOFÍA QUIRNO
Sofía Quirno conceives her drawings, paintings, and sculptures as spaces where subjectivity is negotiated, exploring themes of translation, identity, and form. Her work navigates the intersection between image and metaphor, drawing from her experiences as a woman, an artist, and a foreigner adapting to daily life and domesticity.
For Quirno, art is a space where meaning remains in constant flux. She embraces humor and improvisation to develop provisional solutions—both physical and emotional—as a way to engage with uncertainty. Fantasy becomes a tool to challenge conventional logic, reveal discomfort, embrace misunderstandings, and welcome the instability that emerges when things are unsettled.
She holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Parsons, The New School, and a bachelor’s degree in International Studies from Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, Buenos Aires. She was a fellow at Shandaken Projects’ Paint School (2020), a discourse-based program for painters in New York, and participated in The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program (2020–2021). She received the Sterling Clark Fellowship to attend Vermont Studio Center (2012) and was awarded the Deans Merit Scholarship for her MFA at Parsons. Quirno has been an artist-in-residence at Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (2013) and Triangle Arts Workshop (2010).
Her recent solo exhibitions include: Beat Around The Bush, Praxis NY (2024); El cuerpo es Avant Garde, Hache galería, Buenos Aires (2023); I Went There, Praxis NY (2022); A su lado, Galería Vasari, Buenos Aires (2019); Heads and Tails, Praxis NY (2019); Importa un pepino, Hache galería, Buenos Aires (2017); Afternoon, M E N Gallery, New York (2017); For Starters, Emily Harvey Foundation, New York (2017); Calendar Day, Praxis NY (2016); and Sunny Side Up, Sleep Center, New York (2015).
